Lidarti’s Oratorio “Esther”

  • Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center 12701 North Scottsdale Road Scottsdale, AZ, 85254 United States (map)

The Arizona Bach Festival will present the Arizona premiere of Giuseppe Cristiano Lidarti’s oratorio Esther.

Composed in 1774 for the Portuguese Jewish Synagogue of Amsterdam, Lidarti’s Esther is the only known late Baroque oratorio in the Jewish tradition. Lost for more than two centuries before its rediscovery in 1997, this remarkable 18th-century work, set to a Hebrew libretto by Rabbi Jacob Saraval, will be performed in Hebrew, with projected and printed English translations provided by yours truly!
